Scholarships for Women Who Faced an Unplanned Pregnancy and Chose Adoption

Many birth mothers take this time to consider what they want their future to look like and to set some goals. If your goals include furthering your education through community college, university, or a trade school, we would like to help. Our college scholarships for women program is available to any birth mother that has placed a child for adoption any time after 1990. (Records prior to this year are difficult to verify. For this reason, this date was chosen when we started offering help to birth mothers.) We must have verification of the adoption from the adoption professional that handled the adoption. A woman whose adoption has not been legally finalized is not eligible for the birth mother scholarship. Here is a list of some of the colleges and universities where our scholarships have been used.

There’s a certain kind of invisibility and erasure that feels inherent to being a birth mother.

But receiving this scholarship makes me feel seen, heard, and believed in, and that means so much to me. I’m not sure I can even properly verbalize how much it means!

Thank you for recognizing not just me, but all birth mothers. As I’m sure you know, we don’t get much recognition. Of course, none of us chose adoption for the praise, but it’s difficult when after giving birth, you’re thrown back into whatever difficult circumstances led you to choose adoption over parenting in the first place, usually without any assistance.

The Lifetime Adoption Foundation is one of the only groups I know of that focuses on after-placement care and assistance for birth mothers, and I cannot stress to you enough how valuable your work is. I will certainly not take this financial assistance for granted, and I hope my academic pursuits can make both the foundation and my son very proud.

College scholarships for women are for Birth Mothers. We do not offer scholarships for adopted children.

The previous scholarships that Lifetime Foundation has awarded me have been a wonderful gift. It has helped ease the burden of paying my tuition and has allowed me to attend college without financial aid. As a birth mother, I have volunteered with other organizations and communicated with other birth mothers and young women in the decision process. In my experiences, I’ve noticed that after the adoption, agency attention shifts from the mother, or father, to the child who has been placed. Often the birth parent is then left to continue on without any tools or counseling to fall back on. Finding your scholarship was certainly a blessing when I was searching for options.
