“My Child Shouldn’t Have to Pay for My Mistakes”

I thought to myself, "My child shouldn't have to pay for my mistakes"While I was growing up, I always dreamed of being a mother and having a “fairy tale” family life. I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom and a housewife. The dream was simple, I always thought. However, as I would come to find out God works in mysterious ways.

When I found out I was pregnant, I knew that I would not be able to raise my child the way I wanted to. I barely made enough money to support myself, lived with my parents, and the boy I was dating had no courage to be responsible for his mistakes. I was alone and didn’t know where to turn.

I knew that my only choice was to place the baby for adoption. My child shouldn’t have to pay for my mistakes, I thought to myself. I wasn’t going to let her be raised on welfare and without a father, it was so unfair to allow that to happen. She deserved a better life.

Choosing adoption was the hardest decision I ever had to make. There is no way I would have been able to get through it without the support of my family and my faith in God. I just kept telling myself that, it all happened for a reason. God chose me to have this child for someone else. I look at her face every day and know that I made the right decision.

My whole life I have wanted to be a teacher, and two years ago I realized that the world really needed me to be. My brother was diagnosed with ADHD and was being thrown back and forth within the school system. He would come home in the afternoon from school and be so frustrated with his schoolwork. No one really knew how to explain things to him in a way that he could understand. He is a very smart boy with tons of potential, but he learns differently than everyone else does, and his teachers couldn’t see that. They just thought he was lazy. However, I know better than that, which is why I chose to study Special Education, not only for my brother but for all those millions of children out there who have the same problem as him. I believe that they are all capable of anything they desire, they just need someone to help them discover their own potential.

I know that this scholarship can help me achieve that goal, all it takes for me to succeed is my own faith and a little trust from you. I have the determination in my mind and in my heart to push myself as far as I need to go to help others. I want you to believe in me as much as I believe in myself. Thank you.
